Listen to your body
Pay attention to your symptoms and keep track of how often you use over-the-counter (OTC) medication. If you answer "yes" to at least one of the questions below, you should talk to your doctor and get an evaluation:
  • Do you get heartburn 2 or more days a week?
  • Do you experience nighttime heartburn?
  • Do you find antacids or OTC acid blockers only provide temporary relief from your symptoms?
  • Is your heartburn more severe or occurring more frequently over time?
  • Are you experiencing other symptoms besides heartburn, such as regurgitation, belching, and early satiety (feeling full too soon)?

Use of OTC medications
It's important to know that OTC heartburn treatments should not be used for more than 14 days in a row at the maximum dose without a doctor's supervision. As with any medication, if you take antacids or acid blockers, be sure to read the product label.

Be sure to discuss with your doctor any OTC medications that you take.

This is not a substitute for medical advice. Only your doctor can determine if you have acid reflux disease and prescribe appropriate treatment.
