What are some reasons to see your doctor about your heartburn?
If you're suffering from heartburn, the first step is to listen to your body. Try to monitor your symptoms and ask yourself a few simple questions:

  • Do you get heartburn 2 or more days a week?
  • Do you experience nighttime heartburn?
  • Do you find antacids or over-the-counter acid blockers only provide temporary relief from your symptoms?
  • Is your heartburn more severe or occurring more frequently over time?

The heartburn you're experiencing may be a symptom of a bigger problem—a condition commonly referred to as acid reflux disease. So if you answered, "yes" to one or more of these questions, you should talk to your doctor and get an evaluation.

This is not a substitute for medical advice. Only your doctor can determine if you have acid reflux disease and prescribe appropriate treatment.
