The importance of exercise
Exercise and weight management offer a long list of benefits. Regular exercise helps digestion and can help you lose weight. Being overweight increases your risk of acid reflux disease symptoms. If you're overweight, shedding extra pounds can make this risk go down. So it makes sense
to include exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Exercise: how much is enough?
Exercise does not have to be exhausting to provide benefits. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults engage in moderate to intense physical activity for at least 30 minutes, on 5 or more days a week.
Healthy adults can get greater benefits by engaging in physical activity of more vigorous intensity or of longer duration. Such activity could include jogging, tennis, swimming continuous laps, or bicycling uphill.
The Get Started Walking program
According to Maggie Spilner, a former editor at
Prevention magazine, here's one example of a program that can work well for people who are just beginning to exercise. Start slow and work your way up.
Be sure to stroll for 5 minutes before you pick up your pace, and cool down with a 5-minute stroll at the end of your walk.
Always talk with your doctor before beginning or changing any exercise program. If you feel pain or shortness of breath, stop immediately and consult your physician.
