Healthcare professionals often use a measurement called the body mass index (BMI) to classify an adult’s weight as underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. In general, BMI helps to describe a person’s weight relative to their height. In most adults, BMI is related to total body fat content.
Research supports an association between BMI and GERD symptoms:
- Being overweight or obese (BMI > 25) is a risk factor for GERD symptoms
- The risk of reflux symptoms doubles for patients who are overweight (BMI 25 to 30)
- The risk triples for patients who are obese (BMI >30 to 35)
